Paris Part Deux

Paris Fashion week ended with a bang! Literally, there was a car crash on the set of Givenchy. But more surprising were the feminine draped dresses Riccardo Tisci sent out for Spring. Zabete said Valentino was the best fashion show she’s ever attended, hands down. And Celine had an 80′s moment, making the fashion set collectively gasp. Read below for all the juicy details!

Look 1: Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli called their collection “a fashion opera,” a bold statement you might say, but it was indeed just that fabulous. Departing from the usual girly party frocks, the lineup was a more grown-up assortment for the modern jet-settting woman. Rich, intricate, and heavy on the embroidery, these were world traveler clothes that channeled 70s Bohemian icon Talitha Getty and getaways to Marrakech…or Morocco, you tell me.

Look 2: 80′s at Celine?! The world is stunned. And yet, punchy primary colors, graphic graffiti brushstrokes, Africa references and yep, 80s maximalism; all were used for a show that felt less like a Spring collection than a wardrobe mashup. But it worked! Pheobe Philo loves to shock us, but when she does it always feels right, and right now. The minimal, neutral look we now all so easily identify from Celine has become almost ubiquitous, on street style blogs as well as Zara windows, and when it’s getting knocked off, that’s when you know a trend is about to expire. Time for a change! So let’s follow Pheobe’s lead this Spring and let some color into our lives. Get a little loud. Have fun. And 80′s is always fun.

Look 3: Riccardo Tisci also swung the pendulum at Givenchy. Having reached the pinnacle of right-this-moment trendiness with his Bambi sweatshirts, he changed it up with a much quieter, elegant collection this time out. The focus was draping, and it was sexy and womanly and best of all timeless. This is dressing for real life, nothing here looked destined for a street style blog or even vaguely knock-off-able. Again, every look was shown with flat sandals, which seems to be the right way to ground a dress these days.

Givenchy favorites in store: You must own a Givenchy sweatshirt this season, this is the boot shape you need now, the Nightengale bag is an everyday necessity.

fashion week essentials

1. Editor’s blouse: Channel Carine, our favorite front row femme fatale, in a blouse that means all business, and by all business I mean all fashion. Look for sophisticated sexy details like lace that’s equal parts lady and vixen.

2. Fierce jewels: Jewelry is strong and architectural for Fall. Stow bohemian stacked bracelets and choose a bold Anndra Neen cuff or Art Deco earrings from Eddie Borgo.

3. Print set: The print of the season, literally. Fashion week is the best time to sport a full look, as we know matching is de rigueur again. Make maximum impact with minimal effort and get set!

4. Statement coat: When it comes to coats this season: go big or go home! By big, I mean big statement. Color, print, and volume (cocoon shoulders are a must)– your coat is your car in New York (Kirna once said) so invest and go bold!

5. Top handle satchel: Get your hands on the new bag shape- the top handle satchel. Alexander Wang‘s embossed croc version is a fierce choice, and with enough room for all your notes from the show, it’s actually practical.
