    Designer Q&A

Q&A with Sandra Sandor of Nanushka

We sat down with Hungarian designer Sandra Sandor of Nanushka to learn her inspiration behind the brand and new collection, her thoughts on sustainability, and her visions for the future.

Tell us about where you grew up. In what ways is your childhood present in the Nanushka brand?

I was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary and the city, it's atmosphere, rich cultural history is very much present in every Nanushka collection. Budapest is the intersection of East and West, and the influences of these two colliding worlds live in harmony which became the very essence of Nanushka. I still live in Budapest as this is the place where I feel home and the city and its heritage it's always present in my collections one way or another.

Did you always know that you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I was drawn to fashion from an early age because of my mother. She was a constant inspiration to me, someone who guided me and helped me; and thanks to her childrenswear business I realized quite early that this is what I want to do.

In what ways is being eco-conscious important to you?

Sustainability is a very complex subject andI think it's a very pressing issue especially now. Fashion is the second most polluting industry and we have to act to try and reverse this and preserve our planet for the future generations. Our vegan leather is made in Italy and it's REACH certified. It doesn't contain any PVC, it's PU based. I think the most significant thing about vegan leather is that it cut's out the tanning process which usually contains very harsh chemicals.

"The inspiration behind the SS19 collection was Egypt and rethinking of its traditional Shenti dressing and reimagining the colors of the desert and Egypt."

What is the overall inspiration behind this collection? Do you have a favorite piece?

The inspiration behind the SS19 collection was Egypt and rethinking of its traditional Shenti dressing and reimagining the colors of the desert and Egypt. One of my favorite piece is the Chiara vegan leather trench, where a classic trench gets a modern update. It's versatile as you can use it as a trench or even like a dress.

What's a key piece that every woman should have in her closet?

The robe coat which is a classic and versatile piece - it's effortlessly elegant and a good vegan leather dress which will carry you from day to night.
